I couldn’t find a better subject to start this blog that the mineral fairs, my favorite way to improve my collection.
Of course there are others ways to improve a mineral collection like going out look for specimens by yourself in the nature, exchanging items with friends or buying them by internet from your own home. But today it’s time for my favorite one: the mineral fairs.
Switzerland, even if it’s a small country, has a vast calendar for mineral fairs. Apparently there’s a big interest for minerals and rocks. This interest is probably due to the love for the nature of the majority of the inhabitants joined to the fact that a big part of the Alps chain lies on their territory. The Swiss Alps are very rich on small mineralizations, having a great variety of minerals. In fact, the swiss mountains have always been a cradle of geology and mineralogy.
Go to a fair allows you not only to feel like you’re visiting a museum but to better know the country. Almost every city or town has its own fair once a year!.
When you go to a fair you can buy minerals for your own collection but not only. You also can suit yours needs to know more and more about the mineral world and see some gorgeous pieces you’d probably never have in your collection.
Following I’ll tell you a bit of some fairs I already visit once at least.
In this first part : The mineral fair of Lausanne
Usually it’s taking place one weekend on March in Lausanne, the capital city of the canton of Vaud, the third largest canton by population and fourth by size.
The building where the fair takes place it’s really close to the botanic garden. If you’re starting your mineral collection, it could be fine. However, if you already have a good collection you’d maybe not find anything new but sometimes there are surprises!.
When I went, I always found a very nice old man who always has a good gest with me, giving me discounts or a piece for free. I think it’s because I’m a young foreign interested in alpine minerals, I can’t hide it 🙂 .

Las ferias de minerales en Suiza
Hay muchas maneras de ampliar tu colección. Puedes buscar tu mismo en la naturaleza, puedes intercambiar con amigos, comprar en tiendas online sin moverte de casa o asistir a las ferias, mi opción favorita.
Suiza, siendo un país pequeño, tiene un calendario de ferias muy extenso. Se ve que existe una gran afición a las rocas y minerales. Quizá es el amor a la naturaleza de la mayoría de sus habitantes, unido a que en su territorio poseen un gran pedazo de cordillera alpina, rica en mineralizaciones de pequeño tamaño pero de gran variedad. Las montañas suizas siempre han sido cuna de la geología y la mineralogía.
Ir a visitar las ferias te permite conocer el país. La mayoría de las ciudades o pueblos importantes tienen una cada año. Cada visita a una feria es como asistir a un museo. No sólo compras minerales, también alegras la vista y satisfaces tus necesidades de ver, conocer y descubrir todo sobre el mundo de “las piedras”.
A continuación voy a comentar un poco sobre algunas que ya conozco.
En esta primera parte: La feria de Lausanne
Normalmente se celebra un fin de semana del mes de marzo en la capital del cantón de Vaud. El edificio se encuentra cerca del jardín botánico. Esta feria está muy bien cuando eres coleccionista “amateur”, pero si ya tienes una buena colección no vas a conseguir nada nuevo, aunque siempre hay alguna sorpresa y puedes conseguir alguna buena pieza. Las veces que he ido siempre he encontrado el puesto de un simpático señor mayor, que al verme como un joven extranjero interesado en minerales alpinos (se me nota mucho), ha tenido siempre el detalle de hacerme descuentos o regalarme alguna muestra.
